Eric Gill started as a sculptor and was the foremost inscriptional letter-cutter of his time. These lettering interests led to his work for Robert Gibbings of the Golden Cockerel Press and the Monotype Corporation and his work was commissioned for the design of types for printers and publishers. Two of these types...Gill Sans and Perpetua...became internationally renowned and are still extensively used. Two of his lesser-known type designs, Felicity and Joanna Italic, are often considered as two of the most beautiful printing types available to modern printers.
Harling traces Gill's career and provides examples of Gill's lettering for inscriptions and for printing. There are two folding inserts: one, in color, shows Gill's inscriptional lettering typical of his work as a letter-cutter, and the other reproduces in facsimile Gill's original designs for Joanna roman and italic.
